Intel, AMD Add New Mobile Pro Processors

Last Monday, AMD introduced a number of new processors aimed at enterprise laptops. Today, Intel is following suit with the launch of new 8th Gen vPro mobile processors.

AMD

AMD launched four new processors last Monday aimed at business laptops. Those second-generation Ryzen 3000 Series processors all have four cores, integrate a Radeon Vega GPU, and have a TDP of 15 W. AMD is also introducing a budget dual-core Athlon Pro SKU. All models are manufactured on GlobalFoundries 12-nanometer node based on the Zen+ microarchitecture.

Athlon Pro 300U 2 / 4 2.4 GHz 3.3 GHz 15 W Radeon Vega 3

As with all AMD Pro parts, those models incorporate various security features such as secure processor, Transparent Secure Memory Encryption (TSME), Secure Boot, Firmware Trusted Platform Module (fTPM) 2.0.

Compared to the prior generation, the new SKUs offer a modest 100 MHz.

AMD says that second-generation Ryzen 3000 mobile Pro processors are already shipping to OEM. Leveno and HP will be among the first with products coming soon. Other manufacturers are expected to follow.

Intel

Today, Intel is introducing two new 8th-generation Core vPro processors for business laptops. Codename Whiskey Lake, those chips are manufactured on Intel’s 14nm++.

For the most part, those chips are similar to their non-pro SKUs. With the vPro platform, Intel offers some additional security features such as Hardware Shield which is designed to harden the BIOS against related vulnerabilities. Those models are also the first to leverage WiFi 6 (Gig+) through the company’s recently launched AX200 network adapter.
